Sunday Collector Renovation: The Laundry

28.03.17

It’s hard to imagine now, but this room was originally a mix of damaged pebblecrete and flimsy gyprock walls. Missing an entry door, one had to access the very basic and decrepit laundry from the original back patio. A small change, but one of the biggest in our renovation – was that we were able to incorporate this small space in to the ‘inside’ of the house and the real bonus was that we were able to add a second shower (framless glass) and a toilet.

The first element I decided on for our laundry/bathroom update was to match the cabinetry that I’d chosen in the kitchen from Freedom Kitchens. The two areas are positioned close together, so I was keen for a link between the two spaces. I chose the door profile ‘Sierra’ in white. I love the simple ‘Shaker’ profile that sits well with the grey hexagonal encaustic floor tiles from Tiles By Kate. The floor to ceiling wall tiles and the grey grout match what is happening in the kitchen too. White walls brighten up the fairly dark space.

Visitors often comment on our new washer and dryer, and I have to admit – the designer duo from Smeg are seriously special. Good looks aside (that Smeg nail with their whole appliance range), I love the big 10kg capacity of the front loading washer and the fancy dryer has a sensor controlled drying function. The 8kg capacity is generous in size and the dryer is nice and quiet. I just love how I can close the door on the laundry now, no overheating and annoying condensation etc that I’m used to with my old dryer.

The neat and compact round undermount sink from Clark is perfect for the small space, and the Poseidon sink mixer in chrome from Dorf has been positioned neatly in the corner. I often find laundry bench tops don’t get the same love as kitchen benches, but budget aside, I was determined to use the same classic finish I used in the kitchen – the beautiful Caesarstone ‘Noble Grey’ in 20mm.

I’m finding the extra wall storage in the laundry really handy. Beach, bath and hand towels are accessed easily, and the kids swimming gear also all has a home now. I love our little laundry!
